engaging economics tutor

I have been privately tutoring A-level economics for the last 15 years now and have many, many great reviews from students who are now at leading universities, many of whom have gone onto successful careers in finance, consultancy and econometrics, in both private and public sectors.

I do not tutor full-time and have a role as Infrastructure Manager at a large transport based organisation, which overlaps nicely with the economics tutoring and enables me to provide students with some fantastic material.for exam papers

I am based in the Kingston Upon Thames area and have worked successflly with students from Surbiton High, Kington Grammar, Tiffins (Boys and Girls) Grey Court, Esher College, Laytmer Upper. Since covid and the explosion of online tutoring I have worked with students all round the country.

Note - you can see my profiles and some reviews at TutorDex, TutorPerch, and Tutor Hunt. Non-platform based reviews can be provided on request

My Approach

While most student s will be unique in the process, and speed which they progress the subject, my approach centres around the core skills required by the specific syllabus and that through which exam papers are scored.

From the outset, alongside the content we introduce, isolate and refine these core skills. We work on planning and structuring answers through them, and then we look at incorporating them into mark break down and timing for specific question types. By the time a student sits the final paper they will have a readymade structure in their minds for every question on the paper.

Classes are charged at £60/hour - this includes any marking for homeworks set during class. Students if they wish are provided with my WhatsApp and are free to msg me with any questions they might have.

The four key skills required by both syllabus are outlined below. It would be impossible to get A*/A without being able to use these as the building blocks in the constrution of exam style answers.

1

Knowledge

Ability to recall economic definitions, formulas, theories. Learning stuff in other words!

2

Analysis

The ability to explain and build rational economic process. These are your theories, models, graphs

3

Application

The ability to observe real world economic theory in action - basically bringing the theory to life though the use of source materials or examples

4

Evaluation

The ability to critically assess your analysis or application, accepting its weaknesses or limitations. Good eval returns to the analysis, the less generic your analysis the better your evaluation will be,

Oliver is a reliable, well-versed and organised tutor with a clear approach to the curriculum. When we noticed our daughter was falling behind, he structured a comprehensive plan to cover the required syllabus and exam technique, which - with good effort - took her from a D in her Mocks to achieving an A in her Economics A Level.

Oli was the most incredible tutor for Economics A’Level. My daughter missed a lot of school and really fell behind in year 13. Oli managed to help her catch up completely and excel. She achieved an extremely high A*. He was always available to mark papers and give feedback right up until the exam. She could not have achieved that grade without him.

I had Oliver as my Economics tutor during my A levels, and thanks to his guidance and strong knowledge in economics, I received an A* and admission to a top band university! Oliver explained difficult concepts and ensured I had a wide range of real world application which boosted my confidence and understanding tremendously. I am very grateful for all his help and I highly recommend him to anyone looking to get those top marks. Thank you!
